Getting yourself a Darwin Award to prove the earth is flat...

I see in the news this morning that 61 year old limo driver & self-taught rocket scientist Mike Hughes is going to launch himself in a homemade rocket to see for himself if the earth is flat or not. Amazingly, he had sponsors for this project from a group calling themselves RESEARCH FLAT EARTH. Reportedly the cost of the rocket is more than $20,000.
His aircraft is expected to travel at 500 miles per hour and reach an altitude of 1,800 feet. Yes, 1,800 feet.

Ok, ok, I'm not rocket scientist (like Mike) but the last time I was on an airplane we flew at an altitude of over 30,000 feet! Maybe he should save thousands and book a commercial flight!

It seems to me, Mike has seen a few Evel Knievel videos and wants to out stunt the records of a famous stunt man.

Thanks for reading my blog...

iPhone X face recognition...

One feature of the newly released iPhone (ten) is optical face recognition... 'Face ID' technology. You put the phone in scan mode, rotate your face so it captures a 3D image of the shape of your face/head. Now, you can use it to unlock your phone.

Small glitch... it's not perfect.

It's been tested with twins and consistently some can unlock their twins phone and consistently some cannot.

Torture testing your iPhone X...

Apple released their much awaited iPhone X (that's ten in Roman numerals and not x) and it's reported some people waited in line four days to get one. Fasten your seatbelts as all flagship cellphones are selling upwards of $1,000. If you consider an all glass case phone (with stainless steel frame) to be awesome, just wait until you drop it... awesome won't be the first word out of your mouth.

My thought is having a technologically impressive glass phone is moot since anyone with half-a-brain would be packing it in an impact resistant rubberized case.

That said, you can expect to see a handful of YouTube videos uploaded this week of people torture testing their new X's just to see what they can handle.

If you've ever... dropped your cellphone in the toilet, raise your hand !!
If you've ever... asked someone a question and a minute later asked them the same question, raise your hand !!
If you've ever... farted while making love, raise your hand !!
If you've ever... spit into the wind and it came back to greet you, raise your hand !!
If you've ever... dropped a sandwich on the floor, dusted it off and ate it, raise your hand !!
If you've ever... had food splatter on a clean shirt (before a date) raise your hand !!
If you've ever... tried to drink hot soda and it bubbled out of your nose, raise your hand !!
If you've ever... been bitten for pulling two dogs apart at feeding time, raise your hand !!
If you've ever... scheduled car maintenance so the mechanic can diagnose that odd scraping sound, but the car doesn't make the sound for him, raise your hand !!
If you've ever... starved yourself for a weekend and gained weight, raise your hand !!
If you've ever... answered the phone and forgot about the eggs boiling on the stove raise your hand !!

No excuse for a bad profile photo...

Everyone has a cellphone and every cellphone has a camera... good ones too!
With that technology at hand there is no reason to have a bad profile photo. But, I see 20-30% of the profiles using photos where they are blurred, under exposed or the image is so tiny you cannot make out their face.
Knowing that, logically speaking if your upload a photo with your face obscured then you're really not interested in being discovered.

Uranus will be visible to the naked eye...

No joke... I was reading some science news. As of last week it was reported clearly visible.

"Uranus should be visible to the naked eye this month."

I'm disputing one thing... the reports say you need binoculars. At a risk of sounding like a rocket scientist... if you need binoculars, then it's really not visible to the naked eye.

Anyway, I bookmarked the event and realized it's nearly a week from the date when Uranus had it's closest approach to Earth. Although I missed it, I read the last time this happened was 50 years ago.

So look toward the southeast sky towards Pisces and scan the constellation for a tiny blueish-green disc that should pop out among the dimmer stars and maybe... just maybe you can see Uranus.

Melania Trump's body double...

I saw a few stories last week suggesting Melania Trump has a body double. It's listed on some sites as a hoax or conspiracy theory.

So why would the thought of a 'decoy' be so far-fetched?
Generations of Presidents have done it... having a First Lady doing it too is certainly plausible.

If you recall, Melania really didn't want to be in the White House at all. I recall her preference is Trump Tower, but the cost of security and hassle of getting in and out made it prohibitive.

So... lay low and let the body double make it to outings and appearances so the real Melania can 'chill-out' without security watching her every move.

One mans TRASH is another mans TREASURE...

I made a comment to a previous blog that a 30 year old refrigerator stopped working after Hurricane Irma. I ran it on generator power for a day during the storm and it never got cold enough to make ice. After hooking things back on house current, it worked for a little and completely stopped getting cold. I could hear the compressor kick-it then shut off after a second or two. My suspicion was incorrect voltage from the generator that damaged the compressor.
Not wasting time, I started shopping online at The Home Depot... a place where I buy many things. They had a few different models in the size and price range I was looking for but many were stocked in their warehouse and scheduled deliveries in my area were a week out. My wife and I went to the local store to see what we could get sooner.
It was our luck a floor model closeout was marked down around $250 from their normal price and I called a friend with a pickup truck to see if he was available. The answer was yes, so bought the new refrigerator.

We moved the new refrigerator into the house, plugged it in and it started working. It was then we rolled the old refrigerator to the utility easement... a grassy area between the street and sidewalk. The easement is wide enough to park cars and runs along all the streets here. This is where we normally place garbage cans for the city to service.

In my neighborhood, things get picked up twice a week. If you place an appliance there, you have 100% chance someone will remove it before the city comes on their scheduled appointment. Any appliances get recycled for their scrap metal value.

You cannot discard a refrigerator without removing the doors. It's law as some crawled into one and died. So I went back to the house for tools to remove the door. Probably 5 minutes had passed and there was already a guy with an old mini-van squeezing the refrigerator into the sliding door to the side of his vehicle. I offered my help but he gave me a toothless smile and said he was okay.

That was quick...

After the storm hit south Florida and when it was safe to travel. I decided to go out and take some photos of the damage caused by Hurricane Irma. I caution you if you have a weak heart, maybe you should refrain from looking!

Hurricane Irma knocked out power on the east coast of Florida over a week ago. We've been keeping things going with a generator, marine batteries and power inverters. Food that would spoil was purchased on a daily basis and cooked soon after. My neighbors without backup systems suffered... we didn't.

I got home from work last night around 8:30pm to see the digital clock flashing 2:30 and estimate power came back up around 6pm. I checked the FPL website before I left the office and it showed the trouble ticket was still open. The first things we did was start laundry and swab the inside of the refrigerator with soapy bleach water.
